Seminar on HIV-AIDS-Related Drugs
As a part of the activity of the Department of Physical Sciences, the staff members organized a guest lecture for B.Sc. Biotech students on HIV-AIDS. Dr L Fahmida Banu, MD,DGO,DNBE, MRCOG spoke extensively about the Immuno Deficiency Virus-a retro virus. The salient features of the lecture were:
 
a. Retro virus contains RNA as the hereditary material in place of more common DNA.
 
b. HIV infected person has no observable change for the first few months-called window period. It is only later when the CD4 count decreases below 200 that the person susceptible for infections like PCP, MAC etc.
 
c. Factors of fuelling spread of HIV
 
d. Routes / Mechanism of transmission
 
e. Various prevention methods like Pre and post counseling, testing mandates etc.
 
f. Strategies to control epidemic
 
g. The various drugs like Zidovudio, Abacavir, NNRTIS etc related to the disease.
 
h. The other latest domains of drug research, and therapeutic methods used.
 
She concluded her lecture by emphasizing the fact that there is no permanent cure for the dreadful disease, Prevention is THE BEST drug.
