The students of B.Sc. (Zoology) were taken to a field trip to Natural History Museum, Dept. of Zoology Osmania University, on 26th July 2008. They were accompanied by the staff. The students and staff started from the college by a private transport at 10:20 a.m.and by 11:00a.m. reached the O.U. campus. PURPOSE: 1.To have a detailed study about the past and present animals. 2. To inculcate interest towards animals. 3. To observe a few specimens of species which are not seen in and around A.P. or India. PROFILE: Dr.Sri Srinivasulu, a specialist in wild life & biodiversity. He is the in charge person for Natural History Museum. He did his Ph.D. in captive ungulates (deers, sambar, antelopes) Exclusively worked on Biodiversity of Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary & Herpeto fauna of Eastern Ghats.He and his wife are doing research on bats. Dr.Sri Srinivasulu, incharge of museum, who set up the museum out of his interest and curiosity in maintenance of the animals, spent 3 hours in explaining & highlighted the special features about every specimen there. A few are as follows: -The living fossil –Sphenodon. -Dr.Salim Ali’s- collection of birds. -The extinct bird, elephant bird called Moa. Its egg was considered to be the largest egg. -Differences between parrot and parakeets. India is devoid of parrots. -9 banded Armadillo –this mammal also suffers from leprosy like human being and so this animal has the importance in research and treatment. -Skulls of different animals. -A large collection of specimens of insects. The Aves and Mammals are preserved in an A/C room and have a great collection of them. He explained about the different primates, apes &Marsupials. The beautiful specimens are the colorful birds, from the smallest humming birds to the largest eagles & king vultures. Out of interest & curiosity students had a few queries and were clarified by him. Students were very much satisfied & the trip was very educative & informative.
