The Alumni Association has shown a remarkable progress during the academic year 2009-10. The prime concern of the Alumni committee was to get it registered. As such several steps and enquiries were made to accomplish its registration at a war-footing. A meeting was convened by Mrs. Kavitha Thakur the coordinator of the Alumni committee along with its committee members so as to discuss the plans of holding Alumni activities. During the academic year several contributions were made towards the Alumni association from various departments thus aiding in strengthening the Alumni Association towards progress and establishing more conspicuously
The first activity was contributed from the Department of Mass Communication which was held on the 19th June 2009, where Mr. Prashanth Bhat, an alumni of St Mary’s college presently working as a print media journalist for "Deccan Chronicle” conducted a guest lecture where he briefed the students, how he started his creer and how the media industry works. He also gave various tips as well as suggestions on how to start their careers as students of media and also spoke about internships. The students were highly motivated listening to the various experiences of one of their seniors who has made it big in Journalism. They also asked him several questions as to how to go about various activities of Journalism like interviewing, live news, reporting, editing etc.
The Department of Economics conducted the program “Wise Words” on the 22nd June 2009 where an attempt was made to motivate the students of the intermediate, academically and guide them regarding the professional courses. The event was compeered by Mr. Chintan Kotak & Ms Fizza Menon. Ms Anusha vividly explained the professional course ICWA. It gave an insight to the course with the minutest of details. The students were impressed since the investment in the course is less and the benefits are huge. Ms. Payal Maskara’s presentation was apt, simple and to the point. She explained that the course of Chartered Accountancy had an International recognition in UK and Australia. The concluding remarks were made by the Director Mr. Mahender Reddy. He appreciated both the presentations. Mementos were presented by the Director to both the guests, which was followed with a vote of thanks by Mr. Guru Vardaan. The feedback from the students revealed that the program was informative and a guiding factor in exercising their career options.
The Department of Computer Science invited Mr. Tapos Das, an ex-student of BA Mass Comm., batch 2007, on 25th of August 2009 to share his experience as a Professional in Hardware & Networking after his graduation. Though he was a graduate of Mass Comm., he was more interested in the field of Hardware & Networking which made him register in Jetking, duly fetching him a job in one of the leading MNC’s as a System Engineer with a good package. He also conveyed that irrespective of their streams the students can register themselves in various certificate courses which has a bright future ahead. The programme was very informative and gave good insight about Hardware and Networking for our students. It was a move, encouraging for the students to take up such courses and become good professionals.
Yet another enlightening event was when Mr. Naveen an ex-student of BSc(MSCs) batch 2008 was invited on 6th Jan 2010 by the Department of Maths, Statistics & Computer Science to interact with the students of BSc Stream. Mr. Naveen is presently pursuing MCA from Karunya University, Coimbatore. He shared his various experiences and opportunities he encountered and made full use of it in St Mary’s as an undergraduate student, which has made him more practical in life.
He made the session very lively and interactive by starting with a general quiz thus enabling complete participation from the students. He spoke to the students about the various opportunities in the software industry. The importance of summer projects was also highlighted which will be helpful for their further studies. The program was very informative and gave good insight to our students in choosing their careers.
The Department of Biotechnology organized career session for BSc Biotechnology students with the alumni batch of 2009 on the 12th Jan 2010 in the campus. The outgoing batch of 2004-2007 has settled in different universities abroad pursuing either their masters or PhD programme.
