CAREER PROSPECTS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology is one of the most revolutionary and beneficial scientific advances of the last quarter century. It is an interdisciplinary science including not only biology but also subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and many more. It is also a conglomeration of various combined technologies applied to living cells for production of a particular product or enhancing its quality according to our preferences. Its application varies from agriculture to industry -- food, pharmaceutical, chemical, bio-products, textiles, medicine, nutrition, environmental conservation, animal sciences etc., arguably making it one of the fastest growing fields. Biotechnology combines disciplines like genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology and cell biology, which are in turn linked to practical disciplines like chemical engineering, information technology, and robotics.
Career options:
Like in IT sector, Biotechnology in India is also throwing up tremendous scope for growth and is contributing to the total biotech market worth US $100 billion. The country has a global market worth $91 billion and there is scope for cheap R&D through bio-partnering and co-developing technologies mainly with Chinese and American companies. More and more global pharmacy companies are seeking India to set their research and development centers here.
A biotechnologist may find jobs in various quarters. In India Students can mainly explore job options in the following fields:
1. Drug and pharmaceutical research 2. Public funded laboratories 3.Chemicals 4. Environment control 5.Waste management 6.Energy 7.Food processing & 8. Bio-processing industries
9. The government institutes and organizations, such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), several agriculture, dairy and horticulture institutes offer employment to Biotechnology professionals.
In private sector, there are tremendous job openings for biotechnologists. Drug companies in biotechnology like Dabur, Ranbaxy, Hindustan Lever, Dr Reddy's Labs AUROBINDO that have their R & D units offer Biotechnology professional with handsome pay-package. There are also ample opportunities available for biotechnologists in the food processing industry, chemical industry and the textile industry.
Some industries employ biotechnologists in their marketing divisions to develop business in sectors where their products would be required. There are many opportunities in government labs as well. The major companies, which hire biotechnologists, are Hindustan Lever, Thapar Group, Indo American Hybrid Seeds, Biocon India Ltd., IDPL and Hindustan Antibiotics etc.. It is now considered as one of the fastest growing and promising field of study which is progressing ahead through research and development.
Courses
Entry into Biotechnology is mostly at the graduate level. However, there are few Indian universities offering undergraduate courses in Biotechnology. Candidates having excellent academic background in science at the intermediate level can take up the course in Biotechnology viz. B.Sc,.BIOTECHNOLOGY.
The following Professional Courses can chose in biotechnology:
Undergraduate Program (s) B.sc in Biotechnology Postgraduate Programs

Depending upon the aptitude and necessity, more advanced courses such Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral Research in Biotechnology can also be pursued from selected universities from India and abroad.
Areas of interest
Medical Biotechnology: The field deals in the health care and pharmacy sectors. Any discovery in this field pertaining to drugs, vaccines, diagnostics etc can take the entire industry on another platform altogether.
Nanotechnology: This is a highly interdisciplinary field of Bio-technology dealing with atoms which are only a few nanometers in diameter. It is used for diagnostic and curative purposes.
Industrial Biotechnology: Industrial Biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for the environmentally-friendly production and processing of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, materials and bio-energy.
Agriculture Biotechnology: This is the most sought after job or career specialization for Biotechnology aspirants. Agricultural Biotechnology involves the application of modern Biotech techniques to improve plant health and productivity.
Marine Biotechnology: This is an emerging discipline of Biotechnology. The study of marine animals, researching and developing the drugs and survival mechanism for human are the core objectives of Marine Biotechnology. It also explores the possibility of using Marine life for transplants.
INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT: Both the government and the private sector employ biotechnologists. They conduct research and development work, for increasing productivity, improving energy production and conservation, minimizing pollution and industrial waste etc. Biotechnologists also find opportunities at places involving activities like chemical processes, genetic engineering, textile development, cosmetic development etc.
As the work is largely related to scientific research. It becomes quite important to have a good academic background in science. Hard work and high level of intelligence with a scientific bent of mind, determination, perseverance, imagination, and innovative attitude, ability to work for long hours, originality, and team spirit are some important essentials for becoming a successful biotechnologist.

Employment prospects
Jobs directly related to your degree
Clinical molecular geneticist – uses biochemical and molecular biology techniques to identify genetic abnormalities associated with disease. Screening takes place both before and after the appearance of symptoms.
Clinical research associate -sets up, monitors and completes clinical trials. A clinical trial is a scientific study of the effects, risks, efficacy and benefits of a medicinal product.
Microbiologist -observes and monitors the development and effects of microbes in close detail in order to protect public health.
Research scientist (life science) -designs, plans and investigates experiments and fieldwork to advance and apply knowledge of biological and natural phenomena. Some scientists carry out research with a definite end-use in mind, such as a new product, process or commercial application; other scientists' research focuses on broadening knowledge and building on previous progress.
Regulatory affairs officer -ensures the appropriate licensing, marketing and legal compliance of pharmaceutical and medical products by applying knowledge of scientific, legal and business issues to the processes involved in development, manufacture and
distribution. Jobs where your degree may be useful. Patent attorney -works on behalf of a client to persuade patent examiners that inventions really are new and inventive – not simply trivial adjustments to something that already exists, thus protecting the inventor’s legal and commercial rights.
Technical author-communicates technical information in styles intended to ensure it is understood by the target audience. The author must understand the technology and then design and write documentation. Presentation may be through instruction manuals, leaflets, CD-rom or online help, or other media, such as video, PowerPoint or presentations.
biostatistician-examines a business activity to help decide whether new IT solutions will improve productivity.
Quality assurance manager -aims to ensure that the product or service an organisation provides is fit for its purpose and meets customer expectations, and co-ordinates the activities required to meet this aim.
Technical sales engineer -combines technical knowledge with commercial training to promote and sell equipment to business customers. The emphasis of the work varies,
depending on the level of technical knowledge and understanding needed to competently sell the product or service offered and respond effectively to clients' queries.
