Community Service
2nd August 2008
Community service  is a methodology that is simultaneously employed to strengthen young peoples' senses of civic engagement and nationalism as well as assist them in meeting educational, developmental and social goals. St. Marians believe that service learning cannot be assigned, hence the endeavour is to inculcate the right kind of values and the desire to serve the society should come from within. Hence the necessity of engaging youth in deliberating, planning, implementing, and reflecting on their community service, thereby sustaining high quality service learning. This is intended to make community service an effective learning tool.

This being the moto,  all the students of St. Mary's college Yousufguda, were taken to different organizations of social concern, so as to enable them to learn and  introduce the idea of ethical action.

Since it is not  practically possible to take all the students to one place, students and staff from various departments organized visits to Devnar School for Blind, NIMH (National Institute of Mentally Handicapped)Sweekar Rehabilitation Institute for Handicapped and an orphanage in Kompally. The students donated generously and were very excited to visit these places not to mention their best behaviour and the empathy with which they were able to interact with the visually, mentally and physically challeneged children.

A DVD player was presented to  the Devnar school of Blind, at Begumpet. The Students also sponsored dinner for the students there. They sang songs and interacted with the students which was a pleasant sight to see. Later they served lunch to these children and enjoyed the work. Some of the students though emotionally moved, were proud of the visually challenged students because they were highly talented and very independent in their own way. The speed with which they read their Braille books was very commendable. The well equipped computer lab and the library was amazing.

This field day will be a memorable day in the minds of most of the students of St. Mary's.
