Faculty Development Program

The Computer Science Department of St. Mary’s college Yousufguda hosted a very enlightening seminar for the faculty of the college and the students of the department on the 3rd of November 2010. The seminar which had noted personalities like Anirban Pal and Navin Vutha address the audience was held in the  Theatrix of the college between 10-1. The discussion was aimed at covering the new high in the field termed “Cloud Computing” and reflecting on the futuristic prospects in computer science.

The event began with the performance of the college song following which Mrs. Mary Reddy lit the lamp marking an auspicious beginning. Ms. Anu Victor, HOD, took over the dais and proceeded to welcome the eminent speakers Mr. Anirban Pal who was felicitated by the Chairman BA Reddy and Mr. Navin Vutha who was felicitated by the Director Mr. Mahinder Reddy. The Dean, Comodore Ajit Kumar addressed the gathering and urged everyone to benefit from this discussion.

Mr. Anirban Pal was introduced by Ms. Maria Sarah and he ascended the stage to speak on Cloud Computing which is a huge step forward in Web based processing. To quote him, “Cloud Computing is using resources on the internet from a local residence/office in a manner that you pay for it.” He then went on to explain Cloud Computing in the best of layman terms to the audience following which the pros and cons of such a technology was discussed. An analysis was made on the statement made by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corp who has rubbished Cloud Computing as “Water vapor”. The audience was left amazed on discovering that this technology has been available since 1980’s and interesting questions sprung up.

A short tea break followed this highly enlightening discussion.

Post the break, Mr. Navin Vutha took over and traced the history of computers briefly before ascertaining the bright future prospects in Computer Science. “The future is full of opportunities” was his bottom line as he mapped out the things that could definitely be achieved in the near future. The most interesting prospect by common acclaim was undoubtedly “artificial intelligence”. He also elaborated on Centers of Innovation where the audience could seek future reference.

This was followed by vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Kavitha Anand. The event was concluded successfully as the party broke for lunch.
