The Department of English conducted a guest lecture on 23rd July for I yr Degree students. The resource person was Dr.Annie Pothan, Professor, Dept of English, Osmania University. She delivered a discourse on the effectiveness of communication skills with a special reference to the significance of ‘Non Verbal Communication Skills.’ She started the lecture with a quote “Good, better, best, never let it rest, until you make your good better, and your better best, and your best excellent.”She involved all the students in finding the last line of the quote and each one had different inputs. Then she spoke about what balanced personality is. According to her, to achieve balanced personality, one must be spiritually well built, mentally alert, emotionally intelligent and physically fit. Then she spoke about effective communication skills
. She mentioned about the two aspects of communication: verbal and non-verbal communication and said that non-verbal communication constitutes 60% of communication. She also said that non verbal communication has three aspects; kinesics, paralanguage and proxemics. She gave real life examples too. She concluded her lecture with another quote: “The human population in the world can be divided into four categories: he who knows not is foolish, avoid him. He who knows but knows that he knows not is simple, teach him. He who knows but knows not that he knows is asleep, wake him. He who knows and knows that he knows is wise, follow him.”
On the whole, the discourse was an eye opener to many students and has left a deep impact on their minds. It has also helped the students to face the new challenges in this competitive world. |
