Advertising Workshop

As part of the extension activities for the students the Department of Commerce has organized a Workshop on “Ad – Making for Print Media” for the students of B.Com(Advertising) Final Year. The purpose of the workshop was to take their classroom learning to the real business world where they get an opportunity to interact with the professionals from the industry and get the required practical exposure about the subject.
The Guest speaker for the session was Mr.C. Ratnakar Rao, Director – Stategic Planning, Breeze Advertising PVT. Ltd. Mr. Ratnakar is a marketing communications professional with over three decades of rich experience in the field of advertising, brand management and retail marketing. His main role has been in areas of client development, brand management and strategic planning. Some of the brands that were in his portfolio include Sony, Lay’s, Henkel Detergents, Clorox Liquid Bleach, Landmark Retail (Lifestyle Retail Chain) and Knorr Unilever. He also brings sound experience in retail marketing of home furnishings, fashion brands, electronics and building materials.
The workshop was a three hour session. The speaker first gave a very good presentation on requirements of a print copy. He emphasized that a print copy must have a core proposition for a targeted audience and must make a reader ‘Think, Do and remember’. He quoted many live examples with reference to the points of the presentation. He displayed some very good print copies to make the students understand the importance of the core proposition and the simplicity of the copy.
The students were then divided into groups and were given an exercise to make an Ad-copy on an innovative product which was a combination of two –three products like a refrigerator with LCD, internet etc. another a live portal for education, a rare combination of different food items as a package from Pizza Hut, and an energy drink. It was a real test for the students creativity and spontaneity. The students then presented their work on which the Guest gave them suggestions on further improvements. He at the same time appreciated them for their good work. He was impressed with the talent of the students. The session ended on a high note with the students also very much satisfied with the session.
