ZIP! ZAP! ZOOM! THAT’S WHAT DEFINES THE SPIRIT OF YOUTH OF TODAY READ ON TO FIND OUT MORE: International Youth Day happens every year on 12th August and was initially created by the United Nations back in 1999. The purpose of the day is to highlight all sorts of issues that affect young people around the world. International Youth Day (IYD) is also all about helping young people to gain confidence and encourage self empowerment. It is also a chance for youth to be heard by world leaders and governments.
During the day, young people around the world hold concerts, workshops and public discussions all aimed at raising awareness of youth issues.
Teens in poverty stricken countries are hit the hardest as they do not have access to facilities that help them escape the effects – even for a while. Imagine having to deal with growing up as well as life threatening issues such as finding water, food and shelter!
In Europe youth have collected messages about climate change from the public and these will be delivered to world leaders at the UN climate summits.
Some events around the world include:-
Quebec City, Canada – hundreds of young people will take part in the World Youth Walk that will end with a concert.
Global – young people around the world have entered Shoot Nations International Photography competition that requires them to submit three pictures on the topic of climate change. The winner will have their pictures exhibited in the United Nations, New York headquarters!
