It gives me immense pleasure to bring before you the Second Edition of the ‘Little Women’. It was just about a year ago that on 10th September, 2007, the Women Development Cell was launched in St. Mary’s College, Yousufguda. When the idea was first proposed, I had assured the Director of the institution that we will not let it be a Cell in name only, but would definitely work towards making it a purposeful Unit.
With the co-operation of all the members of the WDC Unit 2007-2008, the WDC took off by sponsoring for education of 10 girl children through the NGO, NAANDI. Members of Staff and Students came forward and contributed for the cause. A visit of a lawyer was an eye-opener about the women rights and abuses, for the students and teachers alike.
In a time as short as 4 months, WDC released the First ever issue of ‘Little Women’ the Annual Journal of Women’s Development Cell, on 26th January 2008. What seemed to be a Herculean task, wasn’t actually a cake walk, but once we had made up our minds to make WDC not only a body in name, but with a cell with a purpose, we strive to make the objective of “creating awareness among the girls and the women staff, apart from maintaining congenial working environment for all the women employees and students”, not only just words. I, thank all the members of the committee of 2007-2008, 2008-2009, without whose help we wouldn’t have been successful. I also wish to express my gratitude to the Principal, Dr. Rabbi Puthiran, because WDC is his brainchild. Finally, without the co-operation and encouragement of the Management of St. Mary’s the identity of WDC, would have just been an illusion. Last , but not the least I wish to thank every student and my colleagues who have contributed articles to the little women.
