Ongoing Projetcs in the Dept. - Ms. Sunitha Panigrahi
The department of Biotechnology has started ongoing projects in the college campus from the month of August. Live projects have been started in two streams of Biotechnology they are industrial Biotech, and Plant Biotech. The projects would be done only by the B.Sc III year Biotech students. There are four batches registered under the guidance of Ms. Sunitha Panigrahi, these batches would be handling the projects of plant Biotechnology

 Abstracts selected for National seminar:

The abstracts of students of Biotechnology who had been doing the projects in the college  have been selected for the paper presentation in the national seminar on MODERN TRENDS IN PLANT IN VITRO BIOLOGY which is to be held by Department of Plant Science , School of life sciences, Bharathidasan University Tiruchirapally, T.N, India.

 Abstract- I

Use of salicylic acid as an inducer of systemic acquired resistance: An economical and ecofriendly alternative to pesticide.

Plants posses a range of defense mechanisms analogous to the vertebrate immune system. The defense mechanisms are classified into induced resistance and acquired resistace. Salycilic acid has been shown to protect the plants against abiotic stress. This elicitor has no direct antimicrobial activity, hence unlike traditional pesticides, they do not assert direct selective pressure on the pathogen population.

The paper deals with the enhancement of disease resistance in legumes as a result of pretreatment of seeds with salicylic aid. The best result was obtained when the seeds were treated with 2.5mM salicylic acid and this treatment would reduce the expenditure in agriculture by stopping the usage of pesticides.

Abstract- II

The bottle neck in raising invitro cultured plants is the process of hardening. The abiotic factors that influence hardening like humidity, temperature, light, soil moisture have been studied extensively. However, the influence of biotic factors on the process of hardening are not well-documented. A bacterial consortium containing various root colonizing bacteria such as Rhizobium, Azospirullum, Acetobacter, Pseudomonas, VAM,Phosphate solubulizing bacteria are been used in improving the rate of hardening process. The bacteria are known to induce resistance in the cultured plants by the various secretion of growth harmone substances and nutrients. Application of this consortioum would be greatly useful to improve the process of hardening in tissue cultured industries. The consortioum has been formulated and tested, it has significantly improved the hardening process.

Abstract- III

one of the major cause in loss of crop productivity is the soil atmosphere, pests and pathogens, so much of the productivity is relied of the application of pesticides which are directly toxic to the pests or pathogen ,but can pose risk to the user, environment, and the nontarget organisms. To improve the soil atmosphere like improving the drought conditions of the soil, which would be sometimes not possible by the farmer. One route forward for the resistance of the drought conditions in the soil and towards the pests and pathogens is to understand the immune mechanism present  in the plants. The seeds which are pretreated with the soil rhizobacterial consortium before planting them, induced some systemic resistance in plants towards drought conditions, pathogens. The research that will be undertaken during this study is just an approach

Presentation of papers iin the nationalseminar by the students :

St.mary’s college congratulate the students of the Biotechnology who had participated in the two days national seminar. The students of biotechnology have attended and presented papers in the two days national seminar held on 7th, 8th of January on MODERN TRENDS IN PLANT IN VITRO BIOLOGY which is to be held by Department of Plant Science , School of life sciences, Bharathidasan University Tiruchirapally, T.N, India.

The department of plant sciences of Bharathidasan University appreciated the work of our students. As they were the only youngest students among the other research scholar, PG students and the delegates present there. They were much happy to know that the graduate students could do the research work at this level

The students were enlightened by the other important lecturers, presentations. They said that this was a great exposure for them to be a part of the national seminar
