World Day to Combat Desertification

World Day To Combat Desertification And Drought
June 17th, 2009

The department of biotechnology observed the world day to combat desertification and drought on June 17th with an intention to create awareness on desertification and drought, their causes and consequences. 

To observe the international day, The department of biotechnology has conducted poster presentation competition on 16th June on desertification and drought .The students of II bsc biotechnology and III bsc biotechnology have participated actively and made different posters combating desertification and drought. Pragya and jetal of III bsc has secured first place, kiran of III Bsc biotechnology has secured second place IN POSTER PRESENTATION COMPETETION

 On 17th June power point presentation competitions were held in the theatrics at 2;15 pm. Ebenezer sir judged the presentations,  mukesh jain of II B: sc biotechnology has secured first prize and gokul of II B SC Biotechnology has secured II prize.

The event started with welcome speech and introduction of the international day by Mrs. deepthi priya. The speech given by Ms. Deepthi priya which was very informative . She mentioned about The World Day to Combat Desertification which has been  observed every year on 17 June since 1995. This year, the Day's theme is "Conserving land and water = Securing our common future "

Desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) threaten human security by depriving people of their means of life – by taking away food, access to water, the means for economic activities, and even their homes. In worst-case scenarios, they undermine national and regional security, force people to leave their homes and can trigger low- or high-level intensity conflicts economic activities, and even their homes. On this World Day to Combat Desertification, she   reminded  everyone about the threats to soil security unleashed by desertification, land degradation and the effects of drought which forms  a peril to secure our common future.

It was followed by power point presentation on desertification and drought by Sireesha Pavani of III BSC biotechnology where she explained about causes and effects of desertification. It was followed by few video clippings and documentaries on desertification which is inspiring, motivating. Mukhesh jain of II bsc biotechnology has given presentation on effected areas of desertification and drought and the steps to combat desertification. Reforestation, implementing modern agriculture practices, traditional life styles helps us to combat desertification. It was followed by mime dance by anusha of III Bsc Biotechnology which depicts the happiness of green earth and sorrow ness of nature due to deforestation. The last presentation was by gokul of II Bsc biotechnology who is a victim of hearing impaired neurological disorder. He has given  presentation on types of drought and effects of drought clearly.

Finally the event was concluded with vote of thanks by pragya of III BSC biotechnology.
